HOW TO USE ELECTRICITY EFFICIENTLY LIGHTING IN HOUSEHOLD

To see something clearly we have to give it sufficient light either from the sun or lamps. The clearance of the objects depends on the amount of light (measured in Lumen per Square meter or Lux).
In the day we can use sunlight for room lighting, while in the night it necessary to use lamps.

Nowadays, the use of electrical lamps is common in urban and rural areas. Since most of electricity use in household is for lighting, electricity saving in the use of lamps will have a significant advantage is in the decrease of electricity account.
Explained below are practical methods to save electricity without reducing comfort, aesthetics and health.

  • Use sunlight for day lighting. Therefore, sufficiently large windows are required. Glare can be reduced by shades and tinted glass (ray-ban)
  • Turn off outdoor lamps after daybreak, and do so to other lamps if not in use. This method can extend the lifetime of the lamps.
  • Suit the lighting intensity (lumen per square meter or Lux) to activities. For reading, sewing and other precision works intensity of 300 Lux is needed. A living room needs 100 Lux, where as a bedroom 50 Lux. Outdoor lamps should only have sufficient light for security.
  • Use Energy-Saving Lamps. Incandescent light bulbs produce 10 lumen's per watt, while Energy-Saving Lamps produce 4-5 times as much. However Incandescent bulbs are still needed for special purposes.
  • Determine the number of points and lamp wattage according to the requirements.
  • For illustrations, a living room or dining room with an area of 4x4-meter just requires, a 18-watt energy saving lamps; a 4x4-meter bedroom needs a 11-watt energy saving lamps; a 2x2-meter bathroom needs a 9-watt energy saving lamps; and a 3x3-meter kitchen needs a 11-watt energy saving lamps.
  • Use bright colours to paint walls and ceilings so as to increase brightness without adding extra lamps or wattage.
  • Arrange the switch system so that only lamps at necessary locations switched on.
  • Clean the surface.
A dirty surface may lower the intensity of the lamp's light.
